Twitch VOD to YouTube: how to save, edit and upload your streams.

Uploading a full VOD takes five minutes and rarely gets views. An edited video from the same stream has a much better chance of finding new viewers. Here's how to get your VODs off Twitch before they expire, how to move them to YouTube, and what makes the difference between an archive and a video people actually watch.

The short version

Turn on "Store past broadcasts" before you go live. Twitch keeps VODs for 7, 14 or 60 days, depending on your status. Download them, or connect YouTube and use Twitch's export. Upload the full VOD only as an archive. For new viewers, cut each stream into one video of 10–30 minutes with one clear story, plus a few Shorts.

Step 1: Save your VODs before they expire

Twitch only saves your streams if "Store past broadcasts" is turned on in your stream settings. You can only switch it on in the Creator Dashboard on the web, not in the mobile app. If it was off, Twitch can't recover the stream later. How long VODs stay depends on your status:

Your statusPast broadcasts are stored for
Partners, Turbo and Prime users60 days
Affiliates14 days
All other streamers7 days

If you stream in 2K or in dual format with a vertical version, the higher-quality or vertical version expires after 7 days; the 1080p or horizontal version stays for the rest of the period. Highlights and uploads are kept indefinitely, but share a combined storage limit of 100 hours.

From Twitch's help pages, as of October 2026. Twitch changes these limits from time to time, so check the current help article.

Step 2: Download or export to YouTube

Twitch gives you two official ways to move a VOD:

  • Download: in the Creator Dashboard, open Content and then Video Producer. Click the three dots next to a video and choose Download. Long videos can take a while to start, and there's no bulk download, so it's one video at a time.
  • Export: connect your YouTube account on your Twitch Connections page. Then use the Export option in the Video Producer to send a video to YouTube without downloading it first.
  • Long uploads: verify your YouTube account. Unverified accounts can only upload videos of up to 15 minutes.
  • Muted parts stay muted: if Twitch muted audio in a VOD, the download is muted too.

For editing, the download is the better choice: you need the file on your computer anyway, and a backup protects you if a VOD expires or gets removed.

Can I upload my Twitch streams to YouTube?

In general, yes. A stream you made yourself is your own content. A few things can still cause trouble, so check them before you upload:

  • Music: background music is the most common problem. YouTube's Content ID can detect it, and the rights holder can then, for example, collect the ad revenue or block the video in some countries.
  • Game music and footage: many publishers allow videos of their games, but the rules differ. Check what the publisher of your game says about videos.
  • Guests: let guests know that the stream will also appear on YouTube.
  • Contracts: if you have an agreement with a platform, network or sponsor, check whether it says anything about where you may publish.

Is it worth uploading full Twitch VODs to YouTube?

As an archive for your community, yes, for example on a second channel. As a way to win new viewers, rarely. On Twitch, people watch live because they want to be part of it. On YouTube, they're looking for a video that's worth their time. A four-hour VOD has no clear topic, a thumbnail without a promise and often minutes of a waiting screen at the start. People who click leave quickly, and videos that few people watch for long get recommended less.

Some streamers look for a way to send every VOD to YouTube automatically. Even where that works, the result is a channel full of four-hour uploads. Use the export for archiving, and edit the videos that are meant to find new people.

How to turn a VOD into a YouTube video people watch

  • One event per video. The boss after 40 tries, the tournament, the argument with your guest. A story with a beginning and an end, not "Stream from October 12".
  • Title and thumbnail first. Decide what the video promises before you edit. Then you cut toward that promise instead of searching for a title afterwards.
  • A cold open. The first seconds show or hint at the strongest moment. Then go back to the start of the story. No intro and no greeting first.
  • Cut the dead air. Waiting, loading screens, menus, breaks and quiet stretches go.
  • Context before the punchline. Viewers who weren't there live need a sentence or two on why the moment matters.
  • Chapters. Timestamps in the description so viewers can jump.
  • The right length. Usually 10–30 minutes. As long as the story holds up, not as long as the stream.

YouTube's rules on reused content

YouTube's monetization policies for the Partner Program don't monetize "reused content": material taken from YouTube or another source without meaningful added value. YouTube allows reused material when viewers can tell there's a meaningful difference between the original and your video, for example through commentary, a storyline added in the edit, or your own presence on screen.

Your own stream is your own content. Still, a compilation with a clear story is safer and better than a loose string of excerpts. Clips from other people's streams need much more care. How YouTube applies its rules in a given case is up to YouTube, so read the current version of the policy when in doubt.

From Twitch VOD to YouTube Shorts

The same stream also gives you Shorts. YouTube allows Shorts of up to three minutes, though most good ones run 20–60 seconds. Twitch's own clip tool creates clips of up to 60 seconds with a portrait version and can post them straight to YouTube Shorts. For moments that need more room, or for captions and a hook, cut from the downloaded VOD instead. How to frame them vertically is in our guide Twitch clips on TikTok; the same clips work as Shorts.

How much work it is, and what editing costs

Most of the work isn't the cut, it's watching. For short clips, you scan the stream for single moments. For a long video, you have to find the story and understand how it unfolds. Plan on roughly one to two times the stream length just to review it. For a four-hour stream, that's four to eight hours before the actual edit starts, plus sound, chapters, title and thumbnail.

That's why prices vary so much. Across the market, an edited YouTube video of 10–20 minutes often costs $200–1,200 from a freelancer; simple cuts where you supply the timestamps cost much less, but you put your own hours in. More on rates in our guide Video editing prices for creators.

Rough market ranges, as of October 2026, from marketplace rate pages, pricing guides published in 2026 and, for salaries, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most price figures come from providers themselves. Individual quotes are higher or lower.

How Virentio does it

From a stream of up to 4 hours we cut a YouTube video of 10 to 30 minutes: the best parts, edited into a story, ready to upload, with chapter markers, an SRT subtitle file and up to two revisions. A long video is $75, no subscription. The Stream package with 4 long videos and 12 Shorts from the same streams is $319 a month. These are founder prices, locked for 6 months from your start. All prices excl. 19 % VAT.

FAQ

Questions on this topic

How do I upload a Twitch VOD to YouTube?

Either download the VOD in Twitch's Video Producer and upload it to YouTube, or connect your YouTube account on your Twitch Connections page and use the Export option. For videos longer than 15 minutes, verify your YouTube account first.

How long does Twitch keep my VODs?

60 days for Partners, Turbo and Prime users, 14 days for Affiliates and 7 days for all other streamers, as long as Store past broadcasts is turned on. Highlights and uploads stay, within a combined 100-hour limit.

Is it worth uploading my Twitch VODs to YouTube?

As an archive for your community, yes. To win new viewers, an edited video of 10–30 minutes with one clear story usually works much better than the full VOD.

Why is part of my downloaded Twitch VOD muted?

If Twitch muted copyrighted audio in the VOD, the download stays muted. To avoid this, keep music on a separate audio track in your stream so it can be left out.

How long should a YouTube video from a stream be?

Usually 10 to 30 minutes, as long as the story holds up. A strong 12-minute video beats a slow 40-minute one.

What does it cost to have a VOD edited into a YouTube video?

Across the market, an edited 10–20-minute video often costs $200–1,200 from a freelancer. With us, a long video from a stream of up to 4 hours is $75 excl. VAT ($89.25 incl. VAT) at founder price, the Stream package with 4 long videos and 12 Shorts $319 excl. VAT ($379.61 incl. VAT) a month.
