Podcast clips for TikTok and Reels: how to get 20 clips out of one episode.

A long episode of two or three hours often holds 15 to 20 good clips, a one-hour episode usually 5 to 10. More important than the number is that every clip works on its own. Here's how to find the moments, how to cut them and how to post them so new listeners find your show.

Why clips grow a podcast

Hardly anyone who doesn't know you will click on a one-hour episode. Short clips on TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts are shown mostly to people who don't follow you yet. A good clip is a free sample: in half a minute it shows what you talk about, how you talk and why the full episode is worth it.

Then there's rhythm. One episode a week means you're visible once a week. Five clips per episode means you're in the feed almost every day. Clips don't replace the episode. They lead to it.

What makes a good podcast clip

Good and weak clips rarely differ in how fancy the captions look. The difference is the moment, the first line and the format. In order of impact:

  • A moment with a payoff. A claim, a story, a surprise. Complete, with the punchline before the end and no sentence cut off.
  • The hook as text on the first frame. A question, a conflict or the core statement at the top, in the first one or two seconds. No greeting and no logo first.
  • Context from second zero. Who's talking? A small name tag with the guest's name and role, or the topic in one line. Strangers know neither you nor your guest.
  • Length that fits the moment. Usually 20–40 seconds. A laugh often needs only 8–25 seconds, a story up to about 90.
  • Clean 9:16. The picture fills the vertical frame, zoomed in on whoever is speaking. No black bars, no text cut off at the edge.
  • Captions people read. One to three words at a time, one key word highlighted, in the middle of the frame, error-free and in the language of the conversation. Many people watch without sound.
  • No foreign marks. No watermarks, logos or prompts from other apps.
  • A specific title. The person and the situation, or a question to the audience. A few fitting hashtags, not ten.
  • One template. Same font, same colors, same ending with a pointer to the full episode, so people recognize your show in the feed.

How to make podcast clips, step by step

  • 1. Note strong moments while recording. Write down the time when something lands. It saves hours later.
  • 2. Pick the moments. Go through the episode or your notes and mark every part that works without context.
  • 3. Set in and out points. Start right before the hook, end right after the payoff.
  • 4. Reframe to 9:16. 1080 × 1920 pixels, cropped to the speaker. With two cameras, switch to whoever is talking.
  • 5. Add captions and a headline. Check names and terms.
  • 6. Write the post caption. One sentence on what it's about, a pointer to the full episode, one to three hashtags.
  • 7. Export a clean file and post it natively on each platform.

How many clips per episode?

It depends less on length than on the conversation. A dense episode with a guest gives more than a relaxed chat. As rough values from our own work:

Episode lengthGood clipsTypical for
30 minutes3–6solo episodes and short formats
60 minutes5–10an interview with one guest
2–3 hours10–20long conversations with several topics

Rough values, not a fixed rule.

Fewer strong clips beat many weak ones. A weak clip doesn't just cost time, it shows new viewers your weakest side.

Where to post podcast clips

  • TikTok: the biggest reach among people who don't know you yet.
  • Instagram Reels: good if your audience or your guests are already on Instagram.
  • YouTube Shorts: the closest path to the full episode, because viewers are already on YouTube. Link the episode from the Short.
  • LinkedIn: worth it for business and expert podcasts, with the same vertical file.

One clean vertical clip works on all of them. Adjust the post caption slightly for each platform, and never upload a file with another app's watermark.

A plan for one episode a week

With 5 clips per episode, you get about 20 clips a month. A week can look like this:

DayWhat goes out
Day 1the new episode, plus the strongest clip
Days 2 to 5one clip a day, ideally at the same time
Days 6 and 7a break, or an older clip that did well, on another platform

Every clip points to the full episode in its caption. And don't forget your archive: a strong moment from three months ago is new to new viewers. Recurring formats help too: the one question every guest answers, a regular segment, or part 1 and part 2 of a long story, as long as each part works on its own.

Audio-only podcasts and guests

Clips work without video too: your cover art, a title and large captions on screen, with a waveform if you like. Clips with video usually feel stronger, because people see faces and reactions. Whatever the format, agree with your guests before recording that moments may be published as clips, and leave out anything they'd rather not see on TikTok.

The most common mistakes

  • Too long: the clip keeps running after the punchline is long gone.
  • No hook: it starts with "Yeah, so..." or with the logo.
  • Black bars: a landscape video with bars above and below looks out of place in the feed.
  • Cut-off sentences: the clip starts mid-sentence or ends before the answer.
  • Hashtags as the title: "#podcast #fyp" tells nobody what it's about.
  • No context: nobody knows who the guest is or why they're worth hearing.
  • No rhythm: three weeks of clips, then a month of silence.

Doing it yourself vs. handing it off

Finding and cutting 5 clips from a one-hour episode easily takes a few hours every week. If you also edit the episode yourself, that time adds up fast. Freelance short form editors often charge roughly $30–150 per clip (market range, as of October 2026). Whoever edits the episode already knows the best moments, so it often pays to hand off episode and clips together. What full editing costs is in our guide Podcast editing cost.

How Virentio does it

We pick the moments with a payoff, cut them vertically on whoever is speaking and deliver them with headline, captions and a post caption. No clip goes out until you approve it. Episode + clips is $105: the full episode edited and 5 clips. Podcast monthly with 4 episodes and 20 clips is $369 a month. These are founder prices, locked for 6 months from your start. If you edit the episode yourself and only want clips, clip packages start at $159 a month for 8 clips. All prices excl. 19 % VAT.

FAQ

Questions on this topic

How do I make podcast clips for TikTok?

Pick a moment that works without context, start right before the hook, crop it to vertical 9:16 on the speaker, add captions and a short headline, and end right after the payoff. Then post it with a one-line caption that points to the full episode.

How long should a podcast clip be?

Usually 20 to 40 seconds. Short laughs work from about 8 seconds, stories can run up to about 90. The clip ends when the payoff lands.

How many clips can I get from one podcast episode?

As a rough guide, 3–6 from a 30-minute episode, 5–10 from 60 minutes and 10–20 from a long conversation of two to three hours.

Where should I post podcast clips?

On TikTok, Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, and on LinkedIn for business podcasts. One clean vertical file works everywhere; adjust the caption per platform.

Can I make clips from an audio-only podcast?

Yes, with your cover art, a title and large captions on screen. Clips with video usually perform better because people see faces and reactions.
