How much does a podcast editor cost? Podcast editing and production costs in 2026.
Recording an episode is quick. Editing it well often takes longer than the conversation itself. Here's what podcast editing costs per episode and per month, why prices differ so much, what full production adds and how to tell whether hiring an editor is worth it for you.
The short version
Freelance podcast editors often charge roughly $50–200 per episode for cleanup, levels and basic cuts. Boutique editing agencies charge about $200–400, and full-service production with show notes, publishing and clips runs $400–1,000 or more per episode. Managed monthly services start around $500 for a few episodes and reach several thousand dollars for business podcasts. Video makes every step more expensive, but it gives you material for clips.

Rough market ranges, as of October 2026, from marketplace rate pages, pricing guides published in 2026 and, for salaries, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. Most price figures come from providers themselves. Individual quotes are higher or lower.
One 2026 pricing guide puts the average for a professionally edited hour-long episode at around $199. That's a useful anchor: far below that, you usually get a basic cleanup; far above it, you're paying for production work around the edit.
Audio vs. video: a video podcast is edited in sound and picture at the same time, and with several cameras the picture has to switch to whoever is speaking. Expect video editing to cost noticeably more than audio only; one industry guide estimates that video roughly doubles editing time, storage and equipment.
Podcast production costs per month
If you publish weekly, most providers price by the month. Roughly:
Type of service
Market range per month
Typical scope
Entry-level managed service
roughly $500–1,000
2–4 episodes, basic show notes, delivery
Mid-market full-service agency
roughly $1,500–3,000
adds transcripts, audiograms or clips, distribution support
Specialist agency for business podcasts
roughly $3,000–6,000+
full post-production, strategy, reporting
Watch for episode caps in monthly packages, and for surcharges: rush turnaround within 24–48 hours often adds 20–50 %.
What podcast editing includes
Good podcast editing is barely noticeable. It just makes the episode easy to listen to. A full edit usually covers:
Cutting the slow parts: tangents, repeated explanations and technical pauses like "Can you hear me?"
Slips and filler words: the distracting ones go, not every "um". Remove them all and people sound rushed.
Shorter pauses: long thinking pauses get trimmed; pauses that carry tension or a joke stay.
Even sound: all voices at the same level, less noise and hum, consistent loudness across the episode.
Picture on the speaker: for video podcasts with several cameras.
Chapters: timestamps with short titles so listeners can jump to a topic.
Intro, outro and export: video for YouTube and Spotify, audio for other podcast apps.
Often not included: show notes, thumbnails, uploading and clips for TikTok or Reels. Ask for a written list before you book.
Why podcast editing prices differ so much
A common rule of thumb: a careful edit takes about two to four hours of work per hour of conversation, more with several cameras, many speakers or poor audio, less for a clean audio-only recording. That's why a $50 edit and a $300 edit of the same episode can both be fair; they're different amounts of work. Other price drivers:
Recording quality. Echo and crosstalk on one track take far longer to fix than clean, separate tracks.
Episode length and number of speakers.
Number of cameras for video podcasts.
Revision rounds and turnaround time.
Extras: show notes, transcripts, thumbnails, clips, publishing.
Full podcast production costs: beyond editing

Rough ranges, as of October 2026, from published podcast cost guides. Prices for gear and hosting change often.
Do it yourself, audio only: a few hundred dollars for gear once, about $15–50 a month for hosting, plus your own 2–4 hours of editing per episode.
Weekly video podcast with a freelance editor: 4 episodes at $50–200 is roughly $200–800 a month for the edit alone. Clips for social media usually cost extra.
Weekly video podcast with editing and clips from one team: with us, Podcast monthly is $369 a month for 4 edited episodes and 20 clips. These are founder prices, locked for 6 months from your start.
Should I hire a podcast editor?
Do the math with the rule of thumb above. One 60-minute episode a week means roughly 8–16 hours of editing a month. If that time is missing for guests, topics or your actual business, or if episodes come out late because of editing, hiring an editor usually pays off. If you enjoy editing and have the time, it may not.
Editor or producer? An editor works on the recording you hand over. A producer also helps with planning, guests, recording sessions and publishing. Most independent podcasts need an editor first; a producer makes sense once the show has a budget and a business goal.
How to choose a podcast editor

Your files: raw recordings and finished episodes should stay yours.
One point of contact who knows your show, your guests and your no-gos.
Delivery time that fits your release day.
