Allowed is not the same as smart

Just because a video can be long does not mean it should be. Platforms push videos people keep watching. A 30-second clip that many watch to the end has an easier time than a three-minute one most people swipe away early. Most good short videos run 20 to 60 seconds. Going longer pays off when a story or explanation really holds up.

YouTube Shorts: three minutes and the format

According to YouTube Help, a video counts as a Short if it is vertical or square and no longer than three minutes. A landscape video is always treated as a regular video, however short it is. If you want a clip to show as a regular video on purpose, export it in 16:9.

Instagram Reels and TikTok

Instagram has allowed Reels of up to three minutes since January 2025; before that the limit was 90 seconds. On TikTok it depends on how you post: the in-app camera allows up to ten minutes depending on your account, and many accounts can upload finished files of up to 60 minutes. A sound you pick before recording can also limit the length.

X and LinkedIn

On X, you get 2:20 minutes without Premium. With Premium, X Help says up to four hours, or ten minutes in the Android app. LinkedIn allows videos from three seconds to 15 minutes and files up to 5 GB. On LinkedIn, landscape and square work as well as vertical.

One clip for every platform

To post the same clip everywhere, stay under 2:20 minutes and export at 9:16, 1080 × 1920 pixels. Then it works on all five platforms without restrictions. Also check the safe zone so text and faces don't disappear under the buttons. For more on clip formats from streams, see Twitch clips on TikTok.
