How long can a YouTube Short be in 2026?
Up to 3 minutes, as long as the video is vertical or square. Longer or landscape videos count as regular videos. According to YouTube Help, this applies to Shorts uploaded on or after October 15, 2024.
All three platforms now allow vertical videos of three minutes or more. That doesn't mean your clips should run that long. Here are the current limits on YouTube Shorts, Instagram Reels and TikTok, what tends to work in practice and how long each type of clip should be.
A YouTube Short can be up to 3 minutes long if it's vertical or square. Instagram Reels also go up to 3 minutes, and TikTok allows longer videos still. In our experience, most strong clips land between 20 and 60 seconds. The rule that matters more than any number: a clip is as long as the moment needs and not a second longer.
| Platform | Maximum length | What to know | Sweet spot for reach |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Shorts | 3 minutes (since October 15, 2024) | vertical or square only; Content ID rule for Shorts over 1 minute | about 20–60 seconds |
| Instagram Reels | 3 minutes (since January 2025) | some accounts can upload longer videos | about 15–60 seconds |
| TikTok | up to 10 minutes with the in-app camera; uploads often longer | limits vary by account and region | about 20–60 seconds |
Maximum lengths from YouTube Help and the platforms' announcements, as of October 2026. Limits roll out by account and region; your upload screen shows what your account allows. Sweet spots are our experience, not platform rules.
Up to 3 minutes. According to YouTube Help, videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 with a square or vertical aspect ratio and a length of up to three minutes count as Shorts. Anything longer, or in 16:9 landscape, is a regular video.
For a long time, a Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim was blocked worldwide. According to YouTube Help, starting September 24, 2026, new Shorts between one and three minutes with an active claim are no longer blocked by default and may stay playable. The claim itself doesn't go away, so it can still affect how that Short earns. Rules for Shorts under one minute haven't changed. Older help pages and blog posts still describe the block, so check the date of what you're reading.
YouTube says most songs from the Shorts audio picker can be used for up to 90 seconds in a three-minute Short, while some tracks are limited to 60 or 30 seconds. Royalty-free tracks from the YouTube Audio Library won't receive a Content ID claim. Background music that was playing in your stream or at an event is the real risk.
Instagram raised the Reels limit from 90 seconds to 3 minutes in January 2025, as announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, and he said at the time that the app remains focused on short video. Some accounts can upload longer videos, but whether those get recommended like regular Reels is less clear. For Reels meant to reach new people, shorter usually wins. In its 2026 posting-time study, Sprout Social calls short video under 60 seconds the top-performing format on networks like Instagram and TikTok.
TikTok's in-app camera records up to 10 minutes, and for many accounts uploads can be longer; TikTok has tested uploads of up to 60 minutes. A sound you pick before recording can also cap the length. For clips meant to find new viewers in the For You feed, 20 to 60 seconds is usually the better range. Longer TikToks tend to work for people who already know you.
The right length depends far more on what's in the clip than on the platform:
| Clip type | Typical length | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stream moment: a fail, a clutch, a reaction | 10–40 seconds | a short setup, the moment, one beat of reaction |
| Podcast or interview excerpt | 30–90 seconds | a question, a clear answer, one strong line to end on |
| Tutorial or how-to | 45 seconds to 3 minutes | each step needs room; cut pauses, not steps |
| Story or behind the scenes | 45–120 seconds | only if the ending pays off |
| Product or business clip | 15–45 seconds | one point, one proof, done |

Have more to say than fits in a clip? Make two clips, or a long YouTube video the Short points to. Either way, export one clean vertical 1080 × 1920 file under 3 minutes and it runs as a Short, a Reel and a TikTok. Timing of the hook matters as much as length; see short form video hooks.

Up to 3 minutes, as long as the video is vertical or square. Longer or landscape videos count as regular videos. According to YouTube Help, this applies to Shorts uploaded on or after October 15, 2024.
As long as the moment needs. In our experience most strong Shorts run 20 to 60 seconds. Tutorials and stories can go longer if every second earns its place.
According to YouTube Help, from September 24, 2026 new Shorts between one and three minutes with an active Content ID claim are no longer blocked by default and may stay playable. The claim still applies, and Shorts under one minute follow the earlier rules.
Reels can run up to 3 minutes. For reaching new viewers, about 15 to 60 seconds usually works best, and shorter is better when the clip is a single joke or reaction.
TikTok allows up to 10 minutes with the in-app camera and often longer uploads, but 20 to 60 seconds is usually the better range for the For You feed. Longer TikToks work best for viewers who already follow you.
